Gunman tries to hijack helicopter in northern Idaho

Maybe he needed an elevator to get home. Shoshone County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested a gunman as he attempted to steal a helicopter. Smelterville Airport, near Kellogg, is used as a staging area for firefighters fighting wildfires in the northern enclave.

Wildfire Today tells the story of the meeting between the elite firefighting team and the shooter. He apparently fired shots and then surrendered to MPs and a soldier who arrived at the scene.

The bizarre turn of events took place late afternoon last Saturday. The alleged hijacker appears to be from Oregon. It is not known if he can fly a helicopter or if he may have a mental illness. The sheriff’s office has not released many details. The man may have fired several shots, but was eventually convinced to surrender. He would likely have been taken to Wallace County Jail and then waited to be brought to justice in county court. If some of the firefighting equipment belongs to the federal government, it could face several more serious charges at that level.
