The Director General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr Bashir Jamoh, said interagency collaboration was essential to the lasting resolution of the problem of accidents in Nigerian waterways, which has resulted in preventable loss of life and property. Jamoh made this claim during an awareness forum in Lagos organized by NIMASA in collaboration with the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) and the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA).
The Director General of NIMASA, who was represented by the head of the Marine Accident Investigation Unit, Captain Abayomi Coker, said the agency was committed to finding a lasting solution to the loss of life and goods in the maritime domain of the country.
“NIMASA has established the Marine Accident Investigation Unit to conduct investigations to establish the circumstances and causes of accidents in the Nigerian maritime domain. We then identify deficiencies in the maintenance of vessels and their equipment, the competence of all personnel on board and their operational practices and procedures. We are looking for measures that can be implemented to prevent such accidents from happening again in the future and interagency collaboration has been identified as playing a major role ”. He said
Officials from MWUN, NIWA, NPA and LASWA joined their colleagues at NIMASA to engage unconventional vessel operators on vessel maintenance, embarkation and disembarkation procedures, marine accident reporting procedures, firefighting and prevention procedures and protection of the marine environment, among other matters.
As part of a related development, graduate students of the Federal College of Fisheries and Marine Research were trained in safety measures on board seagoing vessels by NIMASA.
In his address at the event, NIMASA Director General Dr Bashir Jamoh noted that the majority of accidents in the maritime sector were due to human error and that understanding the basic factors regarding the human element was an essential step to prevent or mitigate such accidents. .
“As the Maritime Safety Administration for Nigeria and in accordance with its mandate to ensure the safety of navigation and the protection of the Nigerian marine environment and its resources, NIMASA has continued to initiate and promote a culture safety to reduce or possibly prevent accidents in our waterways. . You will all agree with me that prevention is better and cheaper than cure, ”said the CEO.
The CEO further stated that the series of lectures had been launched for seafarers / cadets in accredited maritime institutions, with the aim of informing them of lessons learned from accidents in the Nigerian maritime domain and accidents involving marine vessels. Nigerian interest outside the country.
According to Jamoh, “Various issues have caused accidents in our marine environment, and as an agency we have taken note and have a history of it. We are not only responsive, but we are ready to continue to take proactive steps to address it. Therefore, we intend to continue our efforts to ensure sustainability in this regard, as NIMASA believes this will improve and promote the culture of safety in our working environment and prevent it from happening again.
