The new vessels feature an innovative cockpit designed to provide best-in-class visibility. Using Metal Shark’s signature “pillarless glass” with a reverse-tilt windshield dramatically reduces blind spots compared to conventional wheelhouse pumpboats with smaller, framed windows. An innovative two-tier side window arrangement, with a second row of windows below the beltline, provides unparalleled downward visibility from the helm, crucial when recovering a man overboard or during downhill cruising. maneuvering alongside smaller vessels. A panoramic skylight array provides a clear upward view when operating alongside ships or elevated structures, or during helicopter lifting operations. Designed for maneuverability and quick response, the new MDFR pumpboats are powered by twin MAN D2862 LE456 V8, 16-liter, 1,200 horsepower inboard diesel engines coupled to Marine Jet Power (MJP) 350X water jets via ZF500 transmissions, and reach a top speed in excess of 44 knots. The ships can be operated from three different stations; each equipped with MJP’s Combinator digital controls and joystick vector control system for precise maneuvering in close quarters situations. The new pump boats deliver over 8,500 gpm, with Darley ZFE 3000 dual self-priming fire pumps that are PTO driven from the main engines. Each pump draws from its own sea chest in the hull, feeding a central manifold with crossover capability, which in turn feeds the entire system.

From the fire control station to the port helm, flow is directed as desired via electronically controlled 8-inch valves. An enclosed main compartment provides a freshwater shower for decontaminating firefighters who have been exposed to harmful chemicals or fire-fighting elements. A sink and marine toilet are also provided. The on-board electrical systems are powered by a Kohler 15EOZD diesel generator.

A dedicated officer communication station was fitted with two Motorolla APX 8500 all-band mobile radios, a Harris P-25 radio, a Horizon GX6000 Standard VHF radio and a dedicated monitor to view on-board camera feeds. . Two additional GX6000 VHF radios are installed on board each vessel, one at each station.
