FAIRFIELD – The Solano County Probation Department Juvenile Detention Center, in conjunction with the Solano County Office of Education, will host a grand opening of the new construction trades classroom.
Chief of Probation Chris Hansen and Superintendent of Schools Lisette Estrella-Henderson will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Juvenile Detention Center, 740 Beck Ave.
The new classroom aims to reduce future recidivism through applicable and marketable educational and vocational training opportunities, according to a press release. The Juvenile Detention Center and Office of Education has made significant strides in recent years to provide young inmates with real-world education and training opportunities.
A press release from the Solano County Office of Education said the construction trades class “will continue this trajectory and provide youth with the necessary training to equip them with skills that will enhance their employability in the community upon release. “.
“This program emphasizes hands-on learning, exploring career paths, and developing the professional skills of our young people,” Estrella-Henderson said in the press release. “This is part of a support system to help incarcerated youth successfully transition out of custody with academic and life skills that will allow them to grow and thrive as they move in a positive direction. .”
The new classroom has eight workstations to include occupational safety, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, masonry, concrete, drywall, roof framing, and woodworking. Upon completion of each shift, a student will receive credit toward high school graduation as well as the opportunity to receive certification from the National Center for Construction Education & Research Safety.
The course is taught by Vocational Technical Education Teacher Terrell Parr and Classroom Specialist Sabrina True and will provide students with hands-on training including guest lecturers from a variety of trades.
